Dogs and Hot Cars. Huge source of discussion!
Summer is hopefully around the corner soon!
YES, dogs do not belong in hot cars, but it has been taken to the extreme to where I sometimes think people have no common sense anymore.
I am a dog person - I have more than one. I travel a lot for all kinds of reasons, with my dogs. I have gone into McDonald’s to pee and when I return to the car, people are ready to smash my window in! My blind dog was standing on the console "looking" to see if I'm coming back soon. Not panting, not in distress just curious about what is happening!
There is absolutely no excuse to be running an errand, or out for a bite to eat in hot weather, leaving your dog in a car!! None, no excuse at all!!!!!
Leave your dog at home, even it makes them uncomfortable!
Running into an establishment to pee, then going through the drive through right after for a refreshment on road trips should be possible . That is why I made this sign. The reactions are positive, people actually wait by my car to tell me what a good idea this is. I printed and laminated the sign and I hang it up in my window with the exact time I left the car.
Please read this and know the signs of a dog in distress and suffering heatstroke!!
If you encounter a dog in a car on hot day, go through all the steps. Take pictures and record the time every step you take, even of the current weather from where you are!! Leaving a dog in a hot car is not cool, and lots of damage can unknowingly be done. Kidney problems usually do not come out until much much later, remember a dog cannot sweat! However just smashing in a car window while a dog is not in distress and not going through the appropriate steps is not cool either!
Thank you!!!
Thank you for being concerned about my dog(s)!
I am currently traveling with them.
I left my car at AM/PM
I will be back within a few minutes depending on the wait line for the restroom. A weak bladder/IBS/Crohn's makes traveling long distances difficult. Though I try to plan on dog friendly places to stop, it's not always possible, and I am too embarrassed to go where my dog goes!
Please stay with my car so I can thank you in person!!!!
These are signs what to look for when you see a dog in a car and you’re not sure if this dog is in distress!
Dog is fine(green): Dog is panting with tongue out a little but corners of mouth are not pulled back (please note some dogs get really worked up when a stranger is near a car).
Dog in distress(yellow): try to locate owner as soon as possible, if you can’t locate, call 911!! Heavy panting with Saliva dripping from the tongue, the corners of the mouth are pulled far back!
Dog starting to be in danger (orange): warranted to call 911 and tell them you’re getting a dog out of a car!! The gums and tongue are bright or dark red with excessive drooling!
The farther along the distress, saliva will get tougher and the dog’s eyes will become glazed! Every second counts, get professional help asap( red): Smash window in NOW and cool dog down by pouring cool water over the paws, chest and try to have it drink.
